The BPocalypse Theory

July 13, 2010 · 3 comments

I’m just finishing up Angel season 4 right now. The season 4 story arc really gets going in episode 7 “Apocalypse, Nowish”. That episode ends with a rain of fire which indicates the beginning of that season’s apocalypse. Pretty much every season of Buffy and of Angel ends with halting an apocalypse; how we can have concurrent but separate apocalypses in Sunnydale and Los Angeles each year is still unclear to me.

Now lets take a look at current events. One of BP’s methods of cleaning up the oil spill is to burn oil off the surface of the water in the Gulf of Mexico. Someone please explain to me how burning the oil so the chemicals are airborne is any less polluting than letting the oil float around in the water.

Hurricane season is also now upon us. Hurricanes typically form over the Gulf of Mexico and then dump their contents down over land.

From this point on, this post is a completely unscientific and fictional theory intended for the purpose of entertainment only.

Suppose that in addition to water, a hurricane this season picks up some of that burning oil. And then it rains that burning oil down on the land.

Now that’d be a rain of fire and according to Angel season 4, a clear sign of the apocalypse. And according to my theory, BP would thus be responsible for that apocalypse.

BP + Apocalypse = BPocalypse

Fair assessment. When the apocalypse come, the geeks will have seen it coming. Of course, they’ll have seen it coming in a million different ways but one will be right!

A friend of mine recently said that the situation was ripe for a Bruckheimer film.

Oil covered ocean? Check.
Oil covered ocean in a reliable hurricane corridor? Check.

Lightning during hurricane ignites airborne oil, creating fire from the sky. A Bruckheimer apocalypse film is born.
