I love World of Warcraft and probably even more so I love eyeshadow so when I first saw Geek Chic Cosmetics 10 Man Raid eyeshadows I squealed with glee.

In World of Warcraft, there are 10 different classes your character can be. Class determines what abilities and spells you can learn, what types of armor you can wear, and what types of weapons you can use. A raid is a particularly tough piece of content that you would conquer after reaching the highest character level in the game. Depending on the raid, you need 5 to 40 players working together to complete it and you need a variety of skills and spells which you achieve by bringing a mix of classes.

WoW MinimapWhen you are grouped with other players, you can find those players on your minimap and the dots that represent those people on the minimap are displayed in colors that identify their class. Geek Chic cosmetics eyeshadows correspond to these 10 colors.

In this minimap screenshot, the arrow represents my character, the orange dot represents my brother who plays a Druid, the pink dot represents one of our guildies who plays a Paladin, and the red dot represents a Death Knight and the yellow dot a Rogue that we picked up to fill out our 5 man group.

The names of the 10 Man Raid eyeshadows correspond to common in game terms associated with that color’s class. (Although I always thought Mana Battery was a Warlock reference and purple is the Warlock color and white is the Priest color but my research indicates it could refer to either one.)

My main character and the only level 80 I have to raid with is a Mage (Glass Cannon), but I didn’t really feel like light blue was a good eyeshadow color for me so I tested out Tame This (a Hunter reference, my highest level alt is a level 60 something Hunter) and Mana Battery (a Priest reference according to it’s white color, my bank alt is a Priest and I’m currently working on getting her up to at least level 20 so she can have a mount to ride).

The 10 Man Raid eyeshadows are loose powder eyeshadows with absolutely gorgeous iridescence. I’ve worn Mana Battery with a dark eyeliner to work almost every day for the past week and Tame This applied with a damp eyeliner brush looks perfect along the lash line but is a bit dark and intense for an everyday all over the lid color for me. The eyeshadows have fantastic staying power. I always use Urban Decay’s Primer Potion under all my eyeshadows but even after I slept with my eyeshadow on (yeah I know that’s not good for your skin but I’m still suffering that fatigue and was just too tired to take it off) and mushed my face into the pillow all night, I woke up with a still perfect application of Mana Battery.

Sparklecorn meet The Met #BlogHer10

by Carrie on August 23, 2010

Sparklecorn

Saturday night, #BlogHer10 came to a close with the Sparklecorn party which glorified and embraced the tackiness of glitter and unicorns. Take a minute to watch the video of the awesome unicorn cake from Charm City Cakes and then you’ll only have the smallest taste of what Sparklecorn was.

There was also an abundance of glow jewelry, unicorn shaped glitter, candy, 80s music, and a plentiful supply of free drink tickets that needed to be used up at that last party on #pinktwitters.

The #pinktwitter was the signature cocktail of the event and is made up of orange flavored Ketel One vodka, lemonade, grenadine, and mint.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Earlier in the week, my mom and I visited the Met where I assessed that tacky is nothing new. I observed antique glitter, unicorns, excessive use of hair styling products, and gold pet jewelry.

Our first stop within the Met was American Decorative Arts where I was particularly interested in seeing the Tiffany stained glass. The Tiffany pieces were amazing and there were displayed along with some of the work of his next closest competitor and when you look at the pieces side by side it’s obvious that Tiffany was a much, much more talented artist and his name really does deserve the regard it holds today. My favorite of the Tiffany pieces was the Autumn Landscape stained glass window.

On our way through the American Decorative Arts area, I observed a sconce covered in mica (which is the ingredient used in cosmetics, paints, plastics, and inks to make them sparkle). The sconce, made in the early 18th century, would hold and candle and the candlelight would make the whole thing glitter like crazy.

young hercules scupltureNext we visited the Greek and Roman Art collection. While sitting to rest our feet in a massive hall of marble statues, we observed a young Hercules with a lion pelt over his arm. The lion’s hair was styled the same as all of the other Greek hair and we decided that the Greek’s must’ve used a seriously strong hair sculpting product.

Upstairs in the study collections, we looked at the Etruscan art. Etruscans being possibly the indigenous people of Italy who lived in the area that is now Tuscany before they were assimilated by the Romans. The Etruscans must have really loved their pets because a display case of their gold jewelry included jewelry for pets that had been made in 500-300BC. And I thought humans had only imagined the tackiness of dressing up and decorating our pets in the last 10 or so years.

unicornWhile on our way out of the Museum, we walked through the Midevil Art gallery where I caught a glimpse of a unicorn out of the corner of my eye. Upon further exploration of the Met’s collection database from home, I’ve discovered that they have many unicorn related art pieces and next time I’m in New York, I’ll certainly visit The Cloisters which houses a story about a unicorn in the form of 8 tapestries.

Geek Soap Hearthstone Giveaway [Closed]

by Carrie on August 22, 2010

This giveaway is now closed. The winner is #32 Rachel.

hearthstone tooltip from wowA Hearthstone is an item in World of Warcraft that your character keeps with her at all times. When she uses her Hearthstone, she is instantly teleported back to the inn that she has selected as her home.

When your character is in an inn, she accumulates rested experience which will help her level faster next time she’s out adventuring so you always want to exit the game and do your real life sleeping and showering while your character is in an inn.

If you don’t log out in an inn it’s like your character is sleeping out in the middle of Elwynn Forest or Borean Tundra. It’s like your character is camping (although “camping” in World of Warcraft actually has several other meanings, none of which are related to real life camping which is what not logging out from an inn would be like) without a tent or sleeping bag so she doesn’t get rested experience because she’s not getting a good night’s sleep and there’s probably nowhere to shower…

Which is why I think a Hearthstone is a perfect shape for a real life soap: the Hearthstone gets you to an inn and in the inn you’d be able to take a nice long hot shower.

Geek Soap’s Hearthstone soap is Coconut Lime scented and the main ingredient is coconut oil. The soap is hard enough it won’t melt in your soap dish but soft enough to lather. As the Hearthstone is sulfate free, the lather is light but present and the soap is less likely to irritate your skin.

I thought it was really fun to use my Hearthstone soap because I like to believe that my WoW characters are me and with this soap it can go the other way and I can pretend that I am one of them.

I’m also planning ahead for Christmas already and I see the Hearthstone soap as a polite and fun way to motivate friends or family members who maybe play a little too much WoW and shower not quite as often as you’d like to take a break from the game and get in the shower. (Or if they have issues with another video game or computer activity keeping them away from the shower, there’s probably a soap for that too.)

For more information on Geek Soap, you can check out them out on Twitter or Facebook. They’ve got some other awesome soaps like a 20 sided die, a <3, social networking icons, and a Mario 1 up but I still think the Hearthstone is the most awesome.

Trend Watch: Summer 2010 Nailpolish Picks

by Carrie on June 17, 2010

Each new season, I like to go through my giant box of nailpolish and pick out six shades to use that season. I can use the others if I’m particularly inspired but most of the time it’s a lot easier to pick 1 of 6 shades than 1 of 50+.

For summer I’m seeing lots of shades of pink, purple, and red. Here are the polishes in my existing collection that I’ll be focusing on using this summer:

  • nailpolish bottlesOPI Rose to the Ovation gorgeous deep plummy pink
  • OPI Big Apple Red true red, this will be perfect for the 4th of July
  • OPI It’s All Greek to Me hottest magenta
  • OPI Significant Other Color sheer lavender with pink and green iridescence
  • Essie My Private Cabana warm opaque baby pink
  • Essie Congo Bongo pinky-nude with purple iridescence

And as always, I’ll be using my favorite CND Stickey basecoat and Poshe Super Fast Drying topcoat. My routine is to do my tips and toes on Sunday and then redo my tips on Thursday. I usually watch an hour long tv episode while painting which gives my nails plenty of time to dry before I’m touching stuff again. I’ve learned the hard way not to try to type on the computer with semi-wet nails: the white keyboard to my old iMac had colored speckles on all the keys from my nailpolish.
