Essential iPhone Apps

by Carrie on August 17, 2009

iPhone apps are so easy to accumulate en-mass that everyone must have a handful of apps on their phone that they’ve never even launched.

So what are the apps that are actually getting used on a regular basis?

Here’s a list of my essential iPhone apps (links will open in iTunes so you can download these apps too). These are the apps that I actually use frequently versus the other 20 or so apps I have on my phone that have maybe been launched once.

Remote

Remote is far and away my most frequently used application. For over a year it was the only Apple created app that didn’t come on the iPhone but recently they came out with a second app for iDisk so Remote no longer has that exclusive honor. Remote allows you to control your computer or your Apple TV with your iPhone rather than the dinky little white remote those devices are shipped with. This is especially handy when all your little white remotes run out of batteries.

Kindle for iPhone

So you love the idea of the Amazon Kindle but you don’t want to plunk down another $300 on a gadget or you don’t have room in your purse for yet another gadget? Then the Kindle for iPhone app is for you. I still think the books are a bit pricey at $10-15 a pop but I’ve bought 2 and read them on my iPhone so far. Perfect for situations where you suddenly wish you had thought to bring a book with you because with the app it is never too late to download a book on the fly.

Shazam

You know when you’re out and about and you hear a song you like or think you recognize but you just can’t figure out what it’s called. Shazam can identify that song for you. It’ll also create a handy little list of the songs you’ve used it to identify so you still don’t have to bother remembering what it’s called. Shazam does all the hard work for you.

Games

What’s the point in a handheld device if you can’t have games in your pocket? Here are the games that I’ve killed hours upon hours of time with. Perfect for your next airline flight.

Haha sorry, my boyfriend has an iphone and I’m basically obsessed with Topple. ;P Shazam sounds like a really cool one though, I’ll have to have him check it out.

I use Remote w/ my AppleTV & makes me giddy. I also downloaded the kindle app & a couple of weeks later ended up purchasing a Kindle. Shazam is one that I use frequently too. Others that I like are Fandango, UrbanDaddy, Tipstar & Yelp

Have you joined the Words with Friends craze? I’m completely addicted (along with Bejeweled Blitz) and think it’s much better than the Scrabble app. Loved Yahtzee Adventures too (until I completed all the levels and now it feels silly to start over) and Uno is a blast. Need to check out Monopoly now!
