I first tried Evernote in July 2009 and at that time I thought I didn’t like it. Actually, I just hadn’t figured out how to use it effectively.
About a month ago I decided to give it another shot after hearing even more raves for it and this time around I do love it.
Once upon a time, I had a folder called “lists” that I put a shortcut to in my Mac dock and in that folder I had 67 files: mostly .txt files where I wrote down random notes I wanted to be able to access later. I also had several items in Google Docs that I put there because I wanted to be able to access them from my home computer and my work computer. I was experimenting with a Mobile Me gallery where I was collecting photos of home decorating ideas. In the Notes app on my iPhone I had lists of movies I wanted to see, books I wanted to read, and things I might want to buy. Not to mention binders full of magazine tear outs, well, make that binders that are almost empty and the piles of magazine tear outs that I intended to put in those binders.
Evernote is the perfect place to dump all of that information and be able to easily find it again later: a place for everything and everything in it’s place.
Your notes can be text or pictures or even files (like PDF or Excel) if you upgrade to the premium version which I haven’t done yet but am considering. You can download the Firefox add on which makes it easy to clip an entire web page or just a selection to Evernote with one click. You can drag and drop photos into Evernote. You can tag your notes so you can find a particular grouping again later. Or you can search your notes and Evernote even has an amazing OCR feature that allows you to search the text in any photo or scan (take that disorganized pile of magazine tear outs).
Evernote is free (though there is a premium option with additional features) and you can download it for your PC or Mac, access it online, or get the app for your iPhone or a variety of other mobile devices. Your notes sync so you can access all of your information from any location.

Evernote is one of my most favorite programs *ever*. It’s amazing, and so easily searchable. I use it mostly as a cookbook, it’s even awesome for clipping online receipts and saving those.
Sounds cool. I might have to check that out. I have lists everywhere like you once did!
Yep…I’m like you. I tried it about a year ago and it just didn’t click with me. Maybe I’ll give it a go again. I’ve got crap everywhere it’s drive me nuts.
I agree with you Carrie, Evernote rocks! The fact that it will search text in an image totally floats my boat!!
I am like you. I still can’t figure out how to make it work for me. I guess I should invest more time with it.
