How to Make the Most of Follow Friday

June 11, 2010 · 9 comments

twitterWhat is Follow Friday?

Follow Friday (which uses the hashtag #ff and/or #followfriday) is an event on Twitter that takes place every Friday. Thousands of people take some time to recommend some of their favorite fellow Twitter users.

My tips for using Follow Friday as an amazing tool for creating new, meaningful connections for you and your followers on Twitter:

  • Actually follow other people’s recommendations. At least check them out and see if their tweets look interesting to you.
  • Before you recommend anyone make sure you’ve checked out and subscribed to their blog (if they have one).
  • I go through everyone I @ed with that week and follow anyone I’m not following but had a good connection with and recommend anyone I’m already following and think has a lot to offer to my other followers. To see all your @ messages, go to the Twitter home page while logged in and look for the option for @ messages in the right hand column.
  • I make sure to group my recommendations in meaningful ways (foodies, blogging tips, etc) so they’re more useful to my followers (if you’re grouped with others in this way, those are people you especially want to check out).
  • I’ve created a #ff Twitter list to keep track of who I’ve recommend in the past and for others to reference any day of the week.
  • As with most social networking, this is one of those things where the more you put into it, the more you’ll get out of it.

While we’re talking Twitter, make sure you’re following @carrieactually.

Hi!
I have a twitter account, but I don’t use it much. Thanks for sharing all the info about twitter. Maybe I’ll get better at it soon. Have a great day!

Found you via LBS-Tea Party event. I have been so wondering about the usefulness/meaningfulness of Twitter; and as such have been debating whether it would be something worth investing a little time into. Thank you so much for sharing your post!

These are some great tips — thanks! Sometimes I get overwhelmed by all the possibilities in #ff, but I like the idea of starting from my @ list, because that would show who’s been active with me recently. I think I just need to do something, because featuring even just a few good Twitterers each week would be better than nothing.
