Back in October, I came across a hilarious post at The Bloggess via StumbleUpon about a box of Star Wars books and I’ve been planning to tell you about the box of Star Wars books in my garage ever since. Ruth has been reading Star Wars books lately and I wanted to test out the video camera on my new iPhone so the post finally came together as my first vlog. (Note that we won’t be seeing my head until my post-chemo hair and eyebrow situation has substantially improved and I hate the sound of my own voice so it’s cool if you do too.)
Before the last Harry Potter movie came out, I decided I wanted to reread the entire Harry Potter series so I dug out this box labeled “Harry Potter & Star Wars books”.
Once I got the box open, I realized it was actually mislabeled and completely stuffed full of Star Wars books.
Some of my bloggy friends have been getting into Star Wars books so I’ve decided it’s time to dig out the box again and reread some of my favorites.
The bulk of these books were acquired while I was in middle school so the young adult series The Young Jedi Knights is my favorite. The series follows Jacen and Jaina, who are Han and Leia’s children, as they attend Luke Skywalker’s Jedi training academy. This book, Lightsabers, is about their personal quests to acquire the components for and build their first lightsabers.
Another favorite is The Courtship of Princess Leia. This one takes place shortly after Return of the Jedi and is about the prince of a powerful planet that would be a great ally for the Rebels who wants to marry Leia before Han gets his chance. Han’s still off fighting Imperials in another part of the galaxy.
Once I’m done with those, I’ll dig into the rest of the box. I’ve probably read about half of what is in here in the past so if you have any recommendations for your favorite Star Wars books let me know what it is because I probably have it and may or may not have read it.

Awesome! Congrats on your first vlog. I love video on the iPhone, don’t you? My husband says probably his favorite novel is Outbound Flight and his favorite Star Wars novels but his favorite graphic novels are the series Dark Empire and Dark Empire II.
Yay vlogging! My voice makes me sound very young which is why I prefer e-mail to phone and will probably never vlog.
Ok…Star Wars books. 1) The first Thrawn trilogy by Timothy Zahn. I think they’re the first real Star Wars books to be written after the films, though they’re not chronologically the first. Lots of detail, lots of plot, lots of characters & goodness. Zahn was the one who named the old Imperial capital Coruscant and who established that the New Rep would set up a capital there too.
2) The X-Wing series, both Rogue & Wraith squadron. I’m more partial to Wraith squadron because I like Aaron Allston’s writing, but the books read well as a set.
3) The Ambush at Corellia/Assualt at Selonia/Showdown at Centerpoint trilogy. These are shorter than the Thrawn ones and are Corellian-based. I remember liking them but haven’t read them in forever.
Do NOT read Children of the Jedi. It’s crap. (also avoid Darksaber & Planet of Twilight, which are in the same series. Darksaber is by someone else & therefore a bit better but not worth it)
Yay for boxes of Star Wars books!!!
just finished cataloging all the books in goodreads which i like because i can sort my to read list by the ratings other people gave the books. looks like the general population agrees with you. the thrawn trilogy is way at the top and children of the jedi and planet of twilight are way at the bottom.
I totally agree on the Timothy Zahn books. His stuff really made me wish they had brought him to do the script writing for Episode 1-3.
Plus, Mara Jade is the best Star Wars character ever created.
I left a comment on your video!
I have to second Ruth’s recommendations.
thanks for my first ever comment on youtube. it’s so exciting!
Oh man, I remember reading some Star Wars in high school. I can’t remember any plot points anymore though. I went through a stage where I was huge into fantasy and light sci fi.
We have a fabulous used bookstore in town where I’ve been trolling the kid section to acquire some of the books that I loved as a teen. Mostly YA Horror. Christopher Pike and Lois Duncan are my favorites to reread. Thrift stores also seem to be a gold mine for 80′s and 90′s era paperback teen novels. LOL, I feel so nostalgic now.
i loved lois duncan too!
i can barely remember any plot points from the star wars books, but my brother who would’ve been in about 5th grade when we read them can crazily remember the plot of every single one and knows which title each of those plots is associated with.
This is such a fun topic. I’m tempted to put a list on my blog of some of my favorites. Especially since all I read anymore are art related books and magazines. I need to broaden my horizons. I’m starting to become boring.
Confession time. I haven’t read any Star Wars books (but I think my husband has, which is pretty huge, because in our nine years of marriage he has only read about five books).
Second confession. I have just now started reading Harry Potter. Just now. Which prompts me to ask….what was wrong with me? Why did I resist the Potter-y goodness? My rebel streak caused me to miss out for a long time. I’m hoping to finish the series in time for the last movie to come out.
I dont read HP or Star Wars although my husband likes Star Wars. Found your blog thru By Word of Mouth linky. Good job on your fist vlog!
Stephanie
I was such a bookworm as a kid. I kind of miss that as an adult. Time traveling tonight.
