Introducing Carrie Actually

by Carrie on August 9, 2009

Hi, I’m Carrie.

I’m a 26 year old woman living with my cat, Honey, in Sunnyvale, California. I was born and raised here but spent some time in San Diego and Emeryville (it’s right between Berkeley and Oakland) for college. I got my degree in graphic design and work in the printing industry. In July 2010, I completed my treatment for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

My interests range from makeup, J. Crew, and chick lit to World of Warcraft, sci fi and fantasy, statistics, and Apple products. While these are seemingly polarizing opposites, I like to call the combination geek chic.

What’s in a name?

How did I arrive at the name Carrie Actually? Carrie is my first name. Actually is a word that I use far, far too much.

In college I was fortunate enough to go on a field trip to the Pixar studio. While having lunch on their campus, someone was talking about how their young daughter was still in the “actually” phase. That comment really stuck with me because I had never considered it a phase and I’ve obviously never grown out of it. This was only further reinforced when Google’s Webmaster Tools identified “actually” as one of the top keywords I was writing about (after Google did it’s best to exclude commonly used words in the English language) on another website I was writing.

The name Carrie Actually allows me to share with you everything that actually interests me: a full range of topics in the geek to chic spectrum. I have no intention of being a complete resource on any particular topic, but I do strive to add to the collective knowledge of the internet as topics relate to my everyday life.

I found this site by way of your other blog. I love how you customized the Thesis theme on both sites! I’m considering switching to the Thesis theme myself and have been looking at a lot of sample sites. I think yours is one of the nicest looking ones using this theme. Well done!

Hi Carrie,

I see you are a cancer survivor too. How are you doing? I was diagnosed with breast cancer Sept. 2009 and recently finished chemo and surgery.

I also have a money saving blog.

Just wanted to stop by and say hi.

Hope you are doing well.

Love the blog and so glad you’re doing well. I’m a cancer survivor too, diagnosed in 1990 with breast cancer in my thirties…in fact it’s what started me cooking Indian food. Looking forward to following your adventures.

Hey Carrie,
I love the cute design on the blog! I’m excited that you RSVPed to the Silicon Valley “Social Media Day” meetup– I’m organizing it and really hope we get people to come (we’re hosting it at the startup I work at, Wildfire Interactive.)

See you there!!

Hi Carrie!

I’m stopping by your blog for Bloggiesta. Thanks for stopping by mine and commenting about your bookshelves. I think I might use your method for my TBR list–that’s a really good idea!

I see that you are a cancer survivor. One of my good friends also has lymphoma (I believe it’s Non-Hodgkins–it’s a B-cell lymphoma and she also has Waldenstrom’s Macroglobulinemia) and if you’d like to read her blog, let me know. I’ll pass it along! She just finished a stem cell transplant late last year and has been cancer free for about 8 months I think.

I love finding new blogs, and I really like what you write about.

Good luck with the rest of Bloggiesta!

That was a great little intro. When I first saw the title I thought it had something to do with sex in the city, so I immediately had to go to your about page and really see what your content was all about. Ace on your for explaining yourself so clearly :) Brightest Blessings
