Mobile Me and Find My iPhone

August 28, 2010 · 1 comment

Shortly after I got my first iPhone, I realized that I was never going to be able to keep up with pluging my iPhone into my computer to keep my contacts and calendars synchronized so I signed up for Mobile Me.

An individual Mobile Me accounts costs $99 and a family pack for 5 people costs $149. I asked my family if they were interested in the family pack but not a single one expressed the slightest interest so I went ahead with the individual plan.

After a newsworthy iPhone theft incident, my dad asked me if I had to Find My iPhone app installed on my phone.

My mind boggled for a bit. That app should really be called “Find Someone Else’s iPhone” because it is absolutely useless to install it on your own iPhone to find your own iPhone. How are you going to use it after you lose your iPhone?

Once dad figured out that you need to have Mobile Me to be able to locate your lost or stolen iPhone, he was suddenly interested in that family pack.

My current year long subscription had about 4 months left before I needed to renew. We were able to upgrade my individual plan to a family pack for a prorated cost of $16.99.

To activate the Find My iPhone feature, you need to go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calenders and add a new Mobile Me account (you don’t need to use the email account associated with it). Once you have your username and password plugged in you can choose how to use Mobile Me. I have it sync contacts and calenders with my computer and I have the Find My iPhone feature turned on.

To sync with your computer, you will also need to enter your account info on your computer under System Preferences > Mobile Me (on a Mac) and indicate what you want to sync.

They have a similar “find me” program for Android and I love the piece of mind. Of course, to lose my phone, it would actually have to leave my hands. LOL
