I took the plunge and signed up for a membership at the gym.
It’s $31.99 a month for access to just the location across the street from my house and if at any time I decide I want to visit another location I can upgrade then.
I went to a sporting goods store last weekend to get some gear: socks, workout capris (it’s too hot for pants and I don’t like to wear shorts and I only had one pair of suitable capris), headbands for my short hair that won’t yet make a ponytail, googles, and swim cap. I spent almost $200. At which point I realized that if I was going to spend the equivalent of six months worth of gym membership in one pop on gear I might as well go ahead and get the membership so I can use the gear.
I’m currently going five days a week and working out for about 30 minutes each time. I’ve mainly been doing the elliptical and I’ve swam one time. I’d like to try the exercise bike and after I’m done with my physical therapy I’m going to see about doing some strength training. Once I get to the point where 30 minutes is getting easy I might try to move up to 45 minutes and eventually an hour at a time. And once I get up the courage, I’ll give some of the classes a try.

Thanks for hopping with us for the Footloose and Fancy Free hop:) Now following your blog:)
My gym was $30/mo when it was just me, and I can use any club in the US. But there’s no pool. Mine is a 24-hour gym, so I use a keycard to gain entry. There isn’t always staff on hand.
I try to go 4 or 5 times a week, but often only make it for the classes (which are free for now).
I HAVE lost 12 lbs since Christmas though, so that’s a plus
I’ve always been a bit afraid of the classes. I’m not the most graceful creature to ever exist, and somehow I feel those classes emphasize that fact.
Sounds like you have all the necessary gear, though, so even if you’re not graceful, you’ll still look put-together!
Found you on the weekend blog hop! So glad I did!
the gyms are never in a convenient enough location for me to want to go. :/ right across the street is great. it’ll be staring you in the face if you don’t go!
Good for you. While you’re at it, I can’t recommend strength training enough. Using weights makes a huge difference on how your body optimizes getting in shape. I’m not talking super buff steroidal weightlifting but a weight workout that strengthens the muscles you use every day. It’s worth finding a weights workout that you like. It made all the difference for me, and when I gave it up my body was never the same.
HOORAY! great job on being consistent and getting into the exercise habit! Keep it up!
Good for you! I used to own a gym many years ago. Here’s my best advice to avoid burn out… Give yourself one day in between workouts to optimize results. You can do aerobic exercise one day and strength training the next so you’re not working the same muscles necessarily.
Take it slow and you’ll likely stay motivated to stick with it. I’m rooting for you!

Good for you. And I agree with Barbara take a day off between workouts and alternate strength training with cardio. I learned the hard way. I’ve been working out regularly for about five years now and have injured myself three times. Each time was because I pushed myself too hard trying to lose that extra half pound. Losing half a pound is not worth a shoulder injury that takes 6 months to heal. Good luck.
Stopping in from the tea party.
Good Job!
Popping in from LBS.
You inspired me.
I joined a gym recently but am having a hard time motivating myself to go. Unfortunately, it’s NOT right across the street. :=) I’m a new follower who found you at the So Followed hop. Hope you’ll follow back at http://EverythingBeautifulInItsTime.com!
Yay Carrie! You’ll find that you’ll get stronger pretty fast. It’s so good for you to have a place to exercise, especially after all the chemo. I’m sure the physical therapists can even help you put together a great routine for the gym when you’re done with them.
But, if you start tanning, buying teeny bikinis and buying baby oil in bulk I’m going to start wondering if I’ll see you on those Miss Fitness shows on cable.
Sara
seeing as i’m about as pale as possible without actually being albino i don’t think the tanning thing would work out for me
Hi Carrie. I saw you on lady bloggers. wow, gym 5 times a week! I so envy you hitting the gym ,I’m too lazy for it haha. Good luck and have fun while toning up!
Good job in joining the gym. I’m currently at the end of my radiation treatments and I’m hoping to be able to motivate myself to at least take a walk everyday once they are all done. I’m very very lazy so we’ll see.
walking was a big thing for me right after radiation too. i ended up getting a dog because i had been thinking about doing so for years and how can you say no to a walk with a cute puppy.

Don’t be intimidated by the classes… they are a blast! And even if you feel awkward at first (I did) just remember everyone in there did the first few times, too! Classes are SO fun and I feel they motivate me to go more often… I’ll write down a few classes a week into my schedule… then I’ve already pre-committed time to it and make myself go! It’s also a self esteem boost because there’s ALL levels in there… so, some will be way better than you… and others a thousand times worse! Consistancy is key! That is SOO good that you’ve been going that often! Most people don’t have the will power for that!
Stopping by from the blog hop! Good for you! I think that is awesome and you’re going to do a great job.
Stopping by from Helicopter’s Mom Alexa hop. Have a good day!

Hi there- found you through Chic n Savvy’s hop and am a new follower. I have been going to the gym at least 5 days a week now, since March, and I have so much energy and I feel weird if I don’t go… I think you’re taking it easy enough that you can stick to it.Good luck! I hope you have time to follow my life in South Africa by http://withoutcomplexities.blogspot.com
Have a great week!
Yay! I’ve been trying to do the same thing. I hope you keep up with it!

Stopping by from the alexa hop. Have a good day!
It’s great you’re taking steps forward with the gym membership! It’s probably easier to keep up with the workouts, than with just a dvd at home – there’s always distractions to keep me from it. I’ll have to think about joining up, myself
I’m here on the Make Your Rank Lower Monday Alexa Blog Hop!
I visited at least two pages on your blog so it will count w/Alexa. Please visit me at Twice Blessed Life – Raising Twins Heartistically! http://www.twiceblessedlife.com Thank you!
