I thought the Apple event today was a bit of a let down but the stock is doing really well and usually when I love the event the stock tanks so what do I know?
I did not get a bingo. Less than half of my predictions happened. The event was extremely limited to just iPods, iTunes, and the Apple TV.
I was underwhelmed by the new iPod lineup. I won’t be buying a new iPod because I would still have to plug it into my computer to sync it. And I’m even working on selling my old 2nd gen iPod Shuffle on eBay right now (had a non-paying bidder when my 1gb model sold for $27 a couple weeks ago) and the new 4th gen Shuffle looks exactly like the 2nd gen and the new 2gb model goes for $49 so now I’ll probably get even less for my old Shuffle.
iTunes 10 looks pretty exciting. The update server has still been overloaded so I haven’t been able to download it and play with it yet. I’m very excited about Ping and how it compares to Last.fm which is the music social network I’ve been using since July 2005. I currently listen to internet radio at work via Pandora or Last.fm and I don’t think Ping will count what I listen to in there so until iTunes will stream my music to other locations I don’t think Ping will be as good as Last.fm but let’s hope this is a step in that direction.

I’m most excited about the new Apple TV. I already ordered mine. I have the old Apple TV and I’m very interested to see how the two compare.
I have had numerous complications trying to stream media (particularly HD media) to my Apple TV. Even after I upgraded my internet to the fastest I could get in my area, I still can’t stream a movie and not have it pause to catch up on downloading. What I had gone to doing was downloading my movie and then watching it a few hours later but since the new Apple TV doesn’t have a hard drive that won’t be an option anymore (unless I decide my old one is better and stick with it). Hopefully Apple’s new data center will pick up the speed on their end and improve the experience.
Netflix on the Apple TV is very exciting. I’ve been streaming to my Wii for several months and really love it but I think the interface will be much improved on the Apple TV. Again, sometimes my internet doesn’t seem quite fast enough so I get some choppiness when trying to watch shows but Netflix seems to be better than what I’ve tried to stream from Apple in the past so I think there is room for improvement for Apple.
I don’t know what I think about renting TV shows. I’ve bought a lot of seasons via iTunes and at first I feared I wouldn’t be able to watch them with the new Apple TV but now I’m pretty sure I will be able to stream them from my iMac. I like the idea because it would solve the bulk of my storage space problems. Even after getting the 2tb hard drive in my new iMac, I had already decided I wouldn’t be able to buy my entire fall lineup in HD because it would eat up almost all the free space on my drive. I could rent those shows for half the price but I’d be limited on when and how often I could watch them. I think I’ll probably buy my staple shows in SD this year, test out renting a few movies, and see how I feel about renting TV shows next year.
What I think is particularly interesting about the new Apple TV is that it’s the first Apple gadget that doesn’t require a computer to set it up. It’s ready to go out of the box. No activating and no syncing. (We think it’s a little ridiculous around here that you have to sync a new iPhone to your computer before you can use it. I could get everything I need on mine instantly with Mobile Me.)
What did you think of the event? Did you order anything yet? Are you planning to get any of the new gadgets?
Engadget is reporting there will be an Apple event at 10am Pacific time on September 1st.
I’ve got my bingo card and a highlighter ready so I can follow the gdgt live blog (written by former Engadget blogger Ryan Block). I’ll be tweeting as I score any major wins (like a 7″ iPad with iOS4 which I would order immediately) or wireless iPod syncing (which is the only thing that would make me want to replace the Nano that lives in my glove box).

I think we’re all pretty confident that there will finally be an Apple TV update. At the very, very minimum they at least need to push a software update for the existing Apple TV so that it doesn’t keep forgetting my wifi password but I expect we will see lots more than that.
I’m sure we’ll see an all new iPod line up. I expect the iPod Touch to become more like an iPhone sized iPad and there will be increased maximum storage capacity on all the other iPods.
The guitar on the event invitation makes me think that a Garageband software update is going to be a major item on the agenda and along with it I think we’ll see updates to all the other iLife software.
I’m still dreaming that when I park my car in the garage, the iPod Nano I keep in my glove box will automatically sync wirelessly with the computer in my house. That could be as simple as adding wifi to the iPods or as complicated as a cloud iTunes that could be accessed via MobileMe. The current Apple TV syncs wirelessly so it’s obviously doable.
And last but not least, we have my perpetual wishes to be able to sort my Address Book contacts by when and how often I call people and built in iTunes support to let me store my iTunes video files on a separate hard drive and the perpetual rumor of The Beatles on iTunes.
You can download a copy of my Apple Bingo card (PDF, 504kb) or a blank version (PDF, 287kb) to fill in with your own favorite rumors and wishes if you’d like to play along.
Who else always feels like Apple events are such intense experiences that they require a debriefing before you can get back to your normal life?
I think these are today’s biggest paradigm jolters:
- iBooks now supports PDF I see this as a big step towards standardizing the ebook format.
- App store as a “curated platform” Content curation is the next big thing. It’s the only way to deal with the overwhelming volume of digital information available in this day and age. Apple is putting their stamp of approval on the concept.
- Netflix for iPhone Free app coming this summer. But will you still need a paid Netflix account to use it?
- Farmville for iPhone With push notifications so your crops won’t wither no less. (No I don’t play Farmville myself but with 35 million users this is big news. And the iPhone is suddenly going to appeal to a lot more little old ladies.)
- iPhone 4! Available June 24th with preorders starting on June 15th. OS updates for older devices coming June 24th as well.
- HD Video and iMovie Will these new video features make the new iPhone a suitable rival for the Flip?
- Multitasking Now you can play Pandora (and get your cloud music fix) in the background while using other apps.
- Search Engine Options Set your default to Google, Yahoo, or Bing. Several months ago I played with a tool to help you find out which option is best for you and decided that Google is best for me so I won’t be adjusting my settings.
- iBooks comes to the iPhone See point #1. This move pretty much brings everything that I thought made Amazon’s Kindle the strongest ebook reader on the market to Apple.
But what didn’t we see?
- colored iPhones (The Perfect Thing talks about how the pink iPod mini was such a shockingly huge hit. Why not bring that to the iPhone as well?)
- iTunes in the cloud
- Apple TV updates
- wireless syncing for iPhone
- iTunes/Safari/OS X updates
- Beatles on iTunes (but maybe the new Guitar Hero app is a step closer)

What the Next Apple TV Could and Should Be @Gizmodo I would kill for apps on my Apple TV. Some other wishes Apple TV related wishes I have include: it won’t forget sporadically forget my wireless network password, my laptop will not go to sleep while I’m streaming media from it to my Apple TV, and can we finally get some more control over the location our iTunes library is stored in? I really want to set separate locations for my apps and music (internal hard drive) and video (external hard drive).
Twitter Testing New “You Both Follow” Feature @Mashable This feature is going to be super useful. It’ll clue me into how I know new followers and I’ll be much more likely to follow them back. I think it’ll also do a lot of what lists were meant to do but in an automated way; when you see what people you have in common you’ll sort of know what group they belong in.
Vampire Shows Still Confuse Me @Free and Flawed I’m just starting season 6 of Buffy but I really enjoyed her “Angel and Spike were the original Team Edward and Team Jacob” summation.
Living The Examined Life: Personal Data Collection is a Powerful Tool for Change @Get Rich Slowly This is a topic I’m just obsessed with. Like I’ve said before, if I could have stats for everything I do I would. Personal data collection is one of the original features that got me sucked into my obsession with iTunes. I also just started playing with GoodReads to start collecting stats on my reading habits.
