google reader

Remember when you used to click a link you saw and read a blog post and that led to clicking more links and reading more blog posts and sometimes you felt like you were reading the entire internet but it wasn’t because you felt like you had to read all your unread items?

I’m not thrilled with the latest Google Reader update so I was doing that old fashioned sort of surfing instead and I discovered this post from Diana about how her life list is less a to do list and more a selection of possibilities and my mind sparkled.

Have ideas of what you want to do to live your life rich in experiences but don’t commit to the extent that it makes you unhappy.

I started making my own life list not too long ago and in addition to that I want to share this is a list of things I probably want to do in November and of which I may or may not share the process and results with you.

  • give into the cat and turn the corner of the couch she insists on scratching into a more proper and functional scratching post
  • spend hours/days in organizing heaven after the closet people do their installation later this week
  • use my fancy dishes
  • have engagement photos taken to use for our first Christmas card we send together
  • get fresh flowers

What is your opinion of the life list concept? Do you have a life list or something similar?

As I’m off to work like a madwoman as the registration manager at BlogHer ’11, I’ve decided to take these days to reflect back on the most popular posts here at CarrieActually.com over the course of the past year.

@CecilyK recently turned me on to the Google Reader “Next” bookmarklet.

A bookmarklet is something you drag to your bookmarks toolbar and it preforms an action rather than just taking you to one specific bookmarked page. This “Next” bookmarklet takes you to the next unread item in your Google Reader.

Visit The Google Reader “Next” Bookmarklet to read the rest of the post.

I’m featured on BlogHer.com today where I’m sharing my Google Reader organization system that uses a priority tag and at least one “why” tag to help deal with that overwhelming 1000+ unread items problem.

Here’s what I love about the Next button:

  • So much exposure to beautiful blog design and functionality. I’ve already made a few updates to my own site based on things I saw and liked while browsing this way.
  • Partial RSS feeds are no longer an issue.
  • You’re contributing positively to the page view and engagement stats of the bloggers you love.
  • It’s much more inviting and natural to leave a comment when you’re on the blog post already.

Here’s what I don’t love about the Next button:

  • I subscribe to a ton of blogs and in recent months have relied heavily on “sort by magic”. “Sort by magic” doesn’t apply to the next button.
  • No obvious way to keep posts marked as unread when using the bookmarklet.
  • Some blogs are really ugly and load really slowly. The standard reader interface usually doesn’t pull in those slow loading sidebar and design elements.
  • You can skip over posts you’re not interested in a lot more quickly in the standard reader interface.

So for now I’m doing a bit of browsing with the next button but most of my reading in the standard reader.

Have you tried the next button? What did you like and dislike about it?

So much awesome stuff to share this time around and this is just the highly narrowed down list. I’ve changed how I’m sharing articles I like on Twitter lately and now have it set up through Twitterfeed so that when I click the share button in Google Reader it automatically posts the headline and link to my Twitter account. So basically, if you want even more awesome articles that I’m reading every day, make sure to follow me on Twitter to get the full scoop or on Facebook to weigh in on the best of the best articles between Link Love posts.
