I’ve been spending a lot of time at the gym lately (though this week I’ve got a terrible head cold with congestion, snot, and a nasty sore throat so I’ve been sparing the other gym goers and staying home).

When I’m at the gym I’m still chipping away at Couch to 5k. I’ve completed week 6 but now I keep repeating it because week 7, which calls for 3 days of jogging 2.5 miles or 25 minutes without stopping, intimidates me so much.

One thing that’s helped me immensely through weeks 1 through 6 is listening to the right music. I’ve been using a couple different tools to create my playlists.

How to Determine the right BPM for your walking, jogging, or running pace

The first is Jog.fm (free website). I tell it what pace I jog at (14 minutes miles for me – I can jog but not fast) and it tells me what the right BPM (beats per minute) is. Imagine each time I put a foot down being a beat and matching those movements up to the music. It’s sort of a subconcious way to maintain the right pace. I run on a treadmill at the gym so I have to keep the pace or I’d fall off the back but I’ve set up walking playlists that I’ve used while walking outside and can see from my Runkeeper (free iPhone GPS app that tells you how far you went and how fast) data that I naturally keep the pace my music sets when I use it there.

After I tell jog.fm that my mile time is 14 minutes, it tells me that the right BPM for that pace is about 110 and gives a list of songs at or very close to that number.

But I’ve already got a massive iTunes library and I love to make use of what I already have. So I found a second tool that helps me determine the BPM of the songs I already have.

How to find the BPM of the songs you already have

From the Apple App Store I purchased the app Cadence Desktop Pro for $6.99. I’ve experimented with other software over the years and this is the first one I found that really worked. It analyzes your songs (took overnight for the first go of many thousands of songs in my library) and then export that BPM data back to your iTunes library.

How to create playlists that will have your favorite songs at the right BPM for your pace

In iTunes, I make smart playlists for various paces so my 14 minute mile jogging playlist uses the rule BPM is in the range 108 to 112. I add a few other optional rules like the song should have 4 or 5 stars and not been played within the last week to keep it to the songs I really like but haven’t just heard and then play that playlist while I’m on the treadmill doing my Couch to 5k workout at the gym.

iPhone Home Screen

I like to keep it pretty classic with the addition of a few of my most frequently used apps.

In addition to the default iPhone functions that I use day in and day out: messages, calendar, camera, stocks, weather, calculator, alarms, and contacts, my most used apps are Evernote (write notes to myself to sync across my Apple devices), OmniFocus (to do lists to sync across my Apple devices), Kindle for iPhone (reading to sync across my Apple devices – do we see a theme here?), Foursquare (to check in and keep record of my adventures), Mint (to check my budget at any time), and C25K (one of my life list items is to complete this – I’m currently on week 3 – again – this is where I always end up not being able to make it any further).

Tell me what your home screen looks like.

RemindersLast week the details of iOS5 and the iPhone 4S were announced.

A lot of people say they’re underwhelmed but I’m not.

My fiance has not yet been converted to the Apple cult but fully understands that I’m a card carrying member. He asked me what I’m so excited about.

me: “You may not know this about me, but I’m obsessed with lists.”

him: “I actually already had that figured out.”

me: “There’s this really exciting new Reminders app.”

And Reminders is what I’m most excited about because so far I haven’t been satisfied with any to do list app that syncs between my iMac, MacBook Pro, and iPhone. And you can make to do items based on locations and you can make things like grocery lists specific to those locations.

And then I did some blog reading at Mighty Girl and Savvy Eats and got even more list crazy and started my very own life list. It’s a work in progress at this time. I’m probably aiming for 100 items to be completed sometime before I die but I don’t want to be too limiting.

I did much better at taking more variety of photos this past month but I still didn’t reach the one a day goal. August is going to be a test as I’m going on two trips, BlogHer ’11 and then Kauai, and I’m planning on making a photo book of my Kauai trip so I’ll need a ton of photos. I definitely need to average more than one photo a day in August.

Wedding planning thoughts are swirling in my head now that we’re finally getting closer and it’s getting time to actually plan.

In just one month, we’ll be in Hawaii meeting with the wedding planner, selecting a ceremony location, finalizing a date, testing out the resort’s salon, attending a luau to see if it’s the right choice for our rehearsal dinner, and having dinner at the restaurant we’d like to have everyone join us at after the ceremony.

Photography is another very important element that we need to consider. My mom, my brother, and many other family members are very talented photographers. I don’t want them to miss important moments because they’re busy photographing so it’s nice that the wedding package we’re looking at also includes photography but I think my family can do a much better job of capturing the experience beyond just the wedding ceremony and in a candid and meaningful style.

Normally I just look at and use my photos on the computer but I want to have a wedding photo album. I’m not big on printed photos, in fact I don’t think I’ve printed a photo since at least 2008. I also don’t want to spend a ton on having the photographer create and provide the photo album.

And then Shutterfly emailed me to find out if I’d like to create a free photo book for myself and blog about it. And the timing was perfect.

When we go to Kauai next month, I’m going to take a zillion vacation photos with my iPhone and then create a photo book to see how it comes out and see if I like it enough to do my wedding album with Shutterfly.
