A couple recent articles on other blogs got me inspired to clean out my closet and minimize a bit last week.
If I could have iTunes-esque stats for every detail of my life I would. I’m a little bit of a statistics geek. I’d definitely want statistics on how much the various items in my closet get worn. Since I don’t have accurate statistical data, I had to work based on memory.
- I took items out section by section: pants, shirts, shoes, etc.
- My go to, all time favorites went back in the closet right away.
- Anything that I couldn’t remember wearing in the past year or remembered having issues with how the item fit went in the Goodwill box.
- Everything left got evaluated on whether or not I like it, how it fit, and if I could imagine wearing it in the next year or so.
Then I thought a little deeper into the difference between my favorites and the everything else pile. Very interestingly, my favorites are almost all of the impulse purchase, “wow that’s the most amazing piece of clothing I’ve ever seen” variety. Most of the everything else pile was of the “I need some different pants so work doesn’t think I wear the same thing every day” variety.
If I want to wear my favorites all the time even if people start to think I don’t have any other clothes, that’s fine by me.
After sending two huge boxes of old clothes which I don’t miss at all to Goodwill, I have space to add some new favorites so I treated myself to this J. Crew moto style cardigan.
