On Monday, I caught an afternoon matinee of Alice in Wonderland which was perfectly unbusy with only about 5 other people in the theater. My white blood cells are still below half of the low end of normal so I can’t be in crowds or near other people who are sick so I was worried about getting out to see this movie at all.
I was rather surprised that this movie was not a remake but rather more like a sequel. After a day of digesting what I saw, I actually think the new story was amazing and Lewis Carroll would have been hard pressed to write a better sequel himself. I’ll definitely take the time to rent it when it comes out on DVD so that I can enjoy the story again (and I rarely watch the same movie twice).
I was pleased that it was much more epic, fantasy adventure along the lines of Big Fish than spooky, creepy tale like the Corpse Bride. It’s the side of Tim Burton’s style that appeals much more to me (though I did just get a new Nightmare Before Christmas sweatshirt and do enjoy that as well) and the side that I think appeals to a much wider audience than just gothy teens and college kids (but yes I was one of those too).
Have you seen the new Alice in Wonderland yet? What did you think of it?
