Digital Camera Equipment

If you’re in the market for a new digital camera, here’s a look at what I have a love (and since everything I have is a few years old, a reference list for what the latest versions of those items are).

nikond40x-150x150 Nikon d40x: This is my digital SLR body. I use it when I’m shooting to sell my photos on iStockphoto. I got the kit that included an 18-55mm lens and I also keep a spare battery handy. The d40x has since been replaced by the Nikon d60.
nikon55200vr-150x150 Nikon 55-200mm VR Lens: This lens allows me to zoom in quite close to far away objects. The more you zoom in, the more even the blood pumping through your veins noticeably shakes the camera and makes your photos fuzzy. The VR attribute of this lens adds some cost, but drastically reduces that shaky- and fuzziness.
canonsd550-150x150 Canon SD550: This is my bang around point and shoot camera that I can stick in my purse and take to a party or the beach and not have to worry about being super careful with it. The SD550 is several years old now and has been replaced by the SD1200.
ilife iLife: I use iPhoto which is part of Apple’s iLife and comes with all new Macs to download my photos to my computer and sort them into albums. iPhoto ‘08 came with my computer, but iPhoto ‘09 includes some awesome new features like facial recognition so that it can automatically sort out who is in which photos.
photoshop Adobe Photoshop: I do all my photo editing in Adobe Photoshop. When you choose to edit an image from iPhoto in another photo editor like Photoshop, iPhoto makes a second copy of the image for you to edit so that if you really mess something up and then save your work, you can always go back to the original version of the photo. I’m still using Photoshop CS2 which was current back when I was a student and could get the educational version, but CS4 is the latest version.

What’s in your Dock? Essential Software for Mac

While discussing our computer uses the other day, my brother said, “You can learn a lot about somebody by looking at what’s in their dock.”

Let’s take a look at mine:

My interests span media, the internet, graphic design, and gaming (strictly when those games are well designed with the Mac in mind) and that is clearly reflected in my dock.

I’m currently running Snow Leopard and I make good use of several of the programs that come on all Macs:

  • iTunes
  • iCal
  • Address Book
  • iChat
  • Text Edit
  • iPhoto

I also frequently use some free software including:

  • Firefox
  • TweetDeck
  • Amazon MP3 Downloader

My software picks in terms of what I needed to buy to are:

  • Microsoft Office
  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Adobe Illustrator (I’m still using Adobe CS2 since that’s what I bought with the educational discount while in college and haven’t needed to upgrade badly enough to pay full price yet)
  • World of Warcraft (geeky as it is, this is the best designed game for Mac)
  • Spore
  • The Sims 3
  • Turbo Tax (this doesn’t actually make it into the dock since I only need it for a few days each tax season but I buy it every year)
