I’m Thinking about Joining a Gym

June 14, 2011 · 10 comments

I’ve been easing back in to physical fitness since I finished my cancer treatment last summer. I’ve done yoga and I’ve done Wii Fit and EA Sports Active and I’ve done walks but it’s time to get back into something a little more rigorous.

I’ve never gone to a gym before (minus the two or three times I used the campus gym when I went to San Diego State so I guess what I mean is I’ve never paid extra to go to a gym before). There’s a 24 Hour Fitness directly across the street from my house. My best friend is a big fan and sent me a refer a friend thing so I can try it out free for two weeks and she can get some free personal training if I become a paying member.

I visited for the first time last night.

I like that they’ve got an indoor lap pool that’s open at all hours (minus a couple hours Tuesday mornings for cleaning). I like that they’ve got several options for yoga classes and some other classes that I might be interested in trying. I like that they’ve got cardio machines that I can experiment with.

And after my tour I did 25 minutes on the elliptical machine. I’m was sweating good and I’m a little sore and I’m excited to go back (but will probably wait until tomorrow since I don’t want to push myself too hard at first).

If I keep up with going during this two week trial and I like it I plan to sign up.

Are you a member of a gym? What do you like or dislike about it? How often do you go? What’s your routine?

Hey there – Thanks for the Twitter follow!

I just went back to my gym after being away a longggg time (unemployed, sad, lazy – all great excuses). I did the Step plus Abs class, and I can honestly say I felt like a completely new person afterwards. Still do, days later. I like the energy of the group, the music…I was ok at it, not perfect, but cut myself some slack as it had been a while. It’s my thing, and I’d abandoned it. It felt really good to go back.

I think you could find something there that felt right to you. Just make sure you pay month to month with no cancellation penalty.

Looking forward to reading the rest of your blog!

I love the gym. I simply cannot get as good a workout if I stay home. What makes it work for me is the classes — we have all kinds of exercise classes, and the instructors pushing you (not pushing really, but expecting) really makes it work. Just do it!

If I don’t go to a gym I won’t work out – it’s pretty much that simple for me. I need the motivation of having a place that is specifically for and all about exercising. And the fact that I’m paying for it doesn’t hurt either – if I’m shelling out the money, I’m much more likely to feel that I have to go so I’m not wasting my monthly dues.

I used to be an ‘after work’ kind of gym goer, but I’m really pushing myself to get up and work out in the mornings instead. It’s hard because I’m not a morning person but I find that if I do drag my butt out of bed, I get a better workout and I have more energy the rest of the day.

At this point I go 5-6 days a week – 3 days of weight lifting and 2-3 days of running on the treadmill. When the weather is cooperating, I do my runs outside, but currently it’s summer in the South, so there will be no outside running again until fall.

Hello, Fellow Six Footer! I’m so excited that you stopped by my blog!

As for me and the gym, goodness no. Dancing is my preferred form of working out so I do stuff like Jazzercise, belly dancing, Afro Cuban dance, etc. I am thinking about joining the Y for Zumba and maybe some weight lifting classes though.

I have been a member of a gym, but for me it was only effective when the gym was on the way between work and home. There is not one between my house and new job so I would never go out of the way to go. So now I’m not a member of a gym (and it shows). :-)

I haven’t been a member of a gym in many years but I remember loving the time I spent walking on the treadmill with my headphones on. It was the most peaceful part of my day.

I’m 6 treatments from completing my radiation treatments and I hope to get myself in shape after I’m done with my treatments.

I just want to let you know that it is much cheaper to purchase a 2 year membership at Costco than it is to sign up at the gym. At least mention it to the sales rep to see if he can beat that price (2 years for $299 or $12.50 a month).

I hate the gym, I would rather exercise at home, but most of my friends love it!
