An overview of the appearance and lore of the current playable races in World of Warcraft from a casual, female player’s point of view. Almost all of my characters are humans or blood elves because they depict what I’d most like to look like which for me is a cornerstone of a fantasy game.
Human
Almost all of my characters are human because they’re the easiest race for me to associate myself with. They’ve got medieval European based lore and Humans are the classic good guys in the original Warcraft game.
Dwarf
Dwarves are basically short and stocky humans with an Irish twist including accents and beer.
Gnome
I’m 6 feet tall which is unusually tall for a woman. How am I supposed to feel a connection with a character that’s about 2 feet tall? I do appreciate their option for pink hair though.
Night Elf
Night elves embrace nature for their powers. They’ve got purple skin tones but I just don’t like any of their hair color options which are shades of white, blue, green, and purple.
Draenei
Space cows (or maybe goats, but they definitely have hooves and horns). It’s a fantasy world and in my fantasies I am not a cow. I do appreciate the space pop culture references worked into their lore like the Kessel Run from Star Wars.
Orc
Orcs are ugly and I just don’t get their background/lore aside from the fact that they’re the classic bad guys from the original Warcraft game.
Troll
Trolls are ugly but they have a really interesting Caribbean/Voodoo based lore.
Tauren
Another race of cows, but now that I’ve really dug into the Horde storyline with my latest Blood Elf I’m starting to get into their Native American based lore.
Undead
The undead are awesome because they’re basically zombies; humans risen from the dead. Unfortunately they’re really ugly looking and hunched over. I love their lore but I just can’t get on board with their looks.
Blood Elf
The blood elves are night elves that were exiled for being power hungry and using magic. They’re way prettier than the night elves because they have pink skin tones and normal hair colors. The blood elves also live in a super luxurious and beautiful city. This is the Horde race for people who want my kind of beautiful, magical fantasy world.

LOL, I agree with you. When I played I only wanted to play characters that were “pretty”, so I never played with any Horde except for the Blood Elves. I guess I’m just shallow like that. I think I started out with a blood elf and then a human, but eventually made a Draenei character, too. They at least have fun coloring and hair/horns, even if they are space cows.
Ok I agree with alot of that but I love the taurens, The female taurens are pretty, and the males loke mean, Also, my wife has a few Undead females, that actually have a very pretty face. I accept them very much. and trust me there was alot of coaxing to get me to play with her undead char. I finaly had to get past the whole bones showing in the arms and legs, and look at her face. which is actually beautifull, despite bluishgrey skintone. Though now I look her over entirely and think she is sexy. Kinda similar to how DK’s became my favorrite class, though thats a whole ‘nother story. . . FOR THE HORDE!
after i lost my hair from my chemotherapy i actually started an undead warrior alt. i felt like they had the hair styles most similar to my patchy short spikiness and the blood elves pretty hair made me a bit too sad (but then i turned on show helms to cover their hair and they were okay again too)
Eh well alright, but one thing do you play both sides, cause I’ve never liked that, People who play both, then theres no loyalty. One day you can be a Tauren owning Humans and stomping mudhols in gnomes, then the next day your a dwarf, hacking at a Tauren. I’m not gonna try to explain it all in details, but it just seems wrong, I could never bring myself to make an Alliance char and attack The Horde. It’d be like if you befriended someone to go against there enemies, then the next thing, your attackign them and on that enemies side, ya know. I honestly Frown ap9on people who play both sides.
for the first year and half or so that i played i played alliance and then i switched to a new server when my brother got in one of the top raiding guilds there and i play only horde on that server
I started playing WoW to play with my brother and husband. I was really drawn to the horde but I tend to be anti-social even in games so I played what my brother had, alliance. I’ve played horde on and off since then, usually characters that never get to or close to 20, I have alt-itis if you were wondering. I like all races except Taurens, I just really can’t get into them, not humanoid enough for me. Undead and Trolls would have to be my fav horde.
I don’t mind gnomes but actually playing them is difficult for me especially if I’ve been playing a taller race, they are just so damn small and I feel like a gnome would in real life, always having to look/pan up to see things. My main is a dwarf and I think the fact that I am only 5 feet tall helped me really identify with my character and is probably the reason why she’s the only one I’ve gotten to 80 and past 40 for that matter.
I’m really into the alts too. I’ve got one level 80 mage and then 6 more alts on the server I’m currently playing on. I really want to try a druid but I also really don’t want to be a tauren so I’m really excited for the new expansion pack when I’ll be able to make a troll druid.
Oh druids….I just can’t play one. I’ve made many and just can’t do it. Don’t think I’ve gotten one past 10, LOL! Maybe I as well will be able to finally play a druid as a troll. Not sure what it is about them so who knows.
It’s refreshing to see a different point of view on things. I’m ally at heart, My main is a Boomkin. I also have a hunter, Shammy, Priest and Warlock… all of which, except the ‘lock who is a gnome, are draenei. I have also rolled a few scrub undead alts. I gotta say though, I’m unsure about what you’re saying when you say the undead are ugly. cute button face + that raggedy short hair thing = instawin. Plus they’re flirting lines and jokes are so hilarious. I guess that’s my kinda humor though. xD All a matter of preference, I know. when I play world of warcraft I play anything but a belf and human, just because they’re too close to what I am in real life… The way I see it is: Why play a human when you’re already a human in real life?
