How to Strip Piece Perfect Diamonds for your quilt

You will need

  • quilting ruler - my most used ruler is an OmniGrid 6x24
  • rotary cutter
  • cutting mat

1. Cut two or more strips of fabric and piece them together with a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Press the seam open.

In this example, I am using strips that are 1 3/4 inches wide cut from the long edge of fat quarters. After piecing and pressing, each strip is 1 1/2 inches wide and my entire unit is 3 inches wide.

2. Cut one end of the strip unit at a 45 degree angle.

Most quilting rulers have a 45 degree line on them. Rotate your ruler so that 45 degree line is along the longest edge of your strip unit and then use your rotary cutter to trim the end of the unit. See the pink dashed line below.

3. Rotate your strip unit so the edge you just cut is vertical.

That edge is marked with the pink dashed line in the illustration below.

4. Measure in an amount equal to the original width your your strip from the 45 degree angle edge and sub-cut your strip pieced diamond units.

In this example, each unit I cut is 1 3/4 inch wide since I originally started out with 1 3/4 inch strips.

Cut as many diamond strips as desired. Depending on your pattern, you may need to cut your 45 degree angle in the opposite direction for some of your units.
